26 gates of Tungabhadra dam lifted to discharge 78,000 cusecs of water | Hubballi News

Munirabad (Koppal): Due to substantial inflow into the Tungabhadra reservoir over the last two days, 26 crest gates were raised by 2.5 feet on Saturday, leading to the discharge of 78,000 cusecs of water into the river. The volume of water released into the river has been steadily increasing since last Monday and is expected to reach 90,000 cusecs by Saturday evening. At present, the inflow into the reservoir stands at 62,000 cusecs while the outflow is 75,000.The TB dam, which has a total storage capacity of 101 tmcft, is projected to hold only 80 tmcft of water this year, with current storage at 77.1 tmcft. Water was first released into the river through crest gates on July 2 this year due to favourable rainfall. As the reservoir level must be maintained at 80 tmcft, the amount of water released into the river varies frequently.Currently, 70,000 cusecs are flowing into the dam from the Tunga reservoir, 20,000 cusecs from the Bhadra reservoir, and a significant volume of water is also flowing into the dam from the Varada River. Consequently, water was released through 12 crest gates on Saturday morning, and by afternoon, 26 gates were elevated by 2.5 feet, allowing water to flow into the river. As a result of the substantial water release, the monuments of Hampi in the riverbed have reached a stage of submergence, prompting police to advise tourists against visiting the river bed. The TB Board also issued an emergency notice on Saturday, urging individuals near the riverbank to remain alert.
